Guinness World Records
10 lakhs+ youths from all the districts of Karnataka will attempt Yoga poses for the Guinness World Record on January 15th 2023.
Earlier in 2017, a Guinness World Record for the largest yoga presentation or class at a single location was set in Mysuru. To break the record, 55,506 people performed yoga.
In 2018, on International Yoga Day, Kota, a city known for its educational institutions in Rajasthan, was transformed into a “yoga city” as over a one lakh individuals performed yoga simultaneously there and set a new Guinness World Record.
Similar to this, the Government of Karnataka has organised a Yoga event for January 15th 2023. This is an effort to leverage the power of youth, where more than 10 lakh young people from different districts of Karnataka would participate in an effort to break the Guinness World Record on Yogasana.
The district level events will roll up into 12 regional locations and hubs, and this massive outreach event will take place through schools, universities, and the NSS to draw up to 1 crore young people phygitally. The goal of this attempt to break the Yogasana Guinness World Record is to inspire youth to practise yoga, to educate them about the health advantages of doing so regularly, to offer hope to those who suffer from chronic illnesses, and to help them live happier lives through yoga and a healthy lifestyle.
Largest yoga lesson (Multiple Venues At Same Time)
Guidelines to follow:
The largest yoga lesson must follow the structure of a normal class.
The instructor(s) and the students taught must remain the same throughout the lesson. If one drops out, they will not be counted.
At each location, the organisers can choose either to have one solo instructor or a team of instructors leading different groups of people. These instructors cannot be witnesses but are counted in the final total. The instructors must be suitably qualified.
All participants must be taught the same topics simultaneously, thus all participants should be able to either see the instructor(s) or follow their movements on a video screen.
When the projected number of participants is set to exceed 5,000, AND/OR 15 or more venues, a suitable, third-party organisation must step in and handle all aspects of the counting process.
The independent third-party organisation must have prior experience counting large numbers of people at similar events. Any organisation with this experience can be used, however, details of their experience and suitability must be included with the evidence.
Where the attempt has less than 5,000 participants AND/OR under 15 venues, it must be overseen and verified by at least two independent witnesses.
Stewards must be sourced by the attempt organiser and must be independent of them.
Each Steward must be allocated a specific group of participants for observation during the attempt. Participants must be positioned in clearly delineated areas; this can be done using coloured clothing, a marked area or any other method.
For every 50 participants, there must be one designated Steward, unless stated otherwise in the specific guidelines above. It is very important that the Record attempt starts and finishes simultaneously in every location with a difference of 0.01 sec.

GWR STEWARD
- Guinness guidelines require appointment of GWR Steward(s): #1 for every #50 participants. NCC and Bharat Scouts & Guides will be approached for selection of GWR stewards.
- GWR Stewards will be trained on the Guinness Yoga event protocol – through a combination of centralized training (train the location supervisor) location-specific practice session and video training delivery.

- Each steward must supervise their group of a maximum of 50 participants during the record attempt to ensure full participation.
- Each steward must monitor if anybody in their group leaves the participation area, or if any participant pauses for a drink and should make a note of the same in their steward statement.
- The steward must note any participants who have not performed completely and should deduct from the final total either for non-participation or for leaving the allocated area.
- If the total number not participating exceeds 10% of the final total the attempt will be disqualified.
- If Guinness World Records (“GWR”) determines that a Steward is not performing their duties properly, their whole group of participants could be disqualified. This is at GWR’s sole discretion.
What is the role of a timekeeper in a record attempt?
Every venue must have a timekeeper to oversee what time the record attempt has started and what time it has ended.
- The role of a timekeeper is to ensure that any time-related aspects of a record are recorded accurately.
- This role is crucial in all records based on or dependent on time. In this record, the timekeeper must make a note of the start of the record attempt, as starting simultaneously at every location throughout the state is very important.
- These records rely on accurate timekeeping to be done and this cannot be done by the witnesses, as their job is to concentrate on the attempt itself.
- If the record is for the ‘Fastest time to’, then the attempt must be timed by two timekeepers with stopwatches accurate to 0.01 seconds.
- If the two times vary, then the average must be taken as the official time.
- The timekeepers must give a clear start and finish signal to the person attempting the record.
